Gym Marine Group Sales & Marketing Manager, Megan Dickerson, talks us through her top picks of the latest equipment and the trends set to influence superyacht gym design.

The biggest trend for 2024 is the crew gym

We have seen this become an increasingly important consideration for superyacht owners and designers, particularly for yachts at the larger end of the scale where there can often be 20+ crew onboard.

Why invest in a crew gym? A dedicated crew gym gives the crew another space aboard the boat that they can use in their down time, and helps with general fitness, mental wellbeing, and crew moral. Whether it’s a defined crew gym space or a multifunctional area that can be transformed into a training space, with easy to transport and space saving equipment, it’s definitely high on the list for superyacht requirements.

My top pick of equipment for a crew gym include:

Technogym Bike

This bike is accessible for all users – a treadmill or a cross trainers can be a challenge for taller crew if the ceiling heights are restrictive. I also love the Technogym Bike’s Live subscription, which provides access to a range of live and on demand classes to boost crew motivation with guided workouts. The subscription also includes total body workouts for additional strength and cardio to follow on the console screen, which can be rotated and used for training off the bike.

Saltlick Crew Bench

The newly launched Saltlick Crew Bench (pictured above) has been specifically designed for marine environments. The space saving design makes it ideal for a crew gym, use on deck or on the dock. It allows up to seven users to train at once, encouraging crew to train together for additional motivation and providing a social aspect. There’s even a QR code for guided workouts, and it’s been made by crew for crew. Perfect!

New gym equipment and gadgets for 2024

Keep up with the in-crowd (and the fit crowd) with 2024’s new additions to the gym equipment market. Lots of manufacturers have released new models and at the higher end, these have some great customisable features.

For owners and their guests, the aesthetics of an onboard gym space are becoming a higher priority. With luxury equipment in natural woods from the likes of NOHrD and Paragon Studio, there’s no excuse for a gym not looking as styled and polished as the rest of the boat.

Customising equipment with details like adding the yacht’s logo on the dumbbells, or powder coating cardio and strength equipment to match the yacht’s colour scheme, are also popular options.

When it comes to new equipment pieces, my favourites are:

Life Fitness Integrity+

The Life Fitness Integrity+ range offers commercial grade equipment paired with their SE4 console for a more immersive training experience. They’ve been mindful of ceiling heights and operational footprints as well, with the treadmill step-up just 20.3cm.

I’m excited about the upcoming launch of the Life Fitness Symbio line, too. This range will feature a more luxurious design, customisable features, and advanced technology.

Stil-Fit Luxury Functional Trainer

The Stil-Fit Functional Trainer has been extremely popular for our gym designs due to its beautiful mirrored finish, customisable height, and variety of movements that can be performed. The latest model features fully mirrored sides and an integrated lat pull unit.

INTEGRITY PLUS_Tread SE4_24inch_Matte Black_SIDE_3000 x 3000_mr

Technology in gym spaces is getting clever

Technology is leading the way, and we are seeing an increased demand for high-tech audiovisual integrations in superyacht gyms. Users want to link to 3rd party training apps from machines so they can track their training from wherever they are via platforms like Strava and Zwift. This is a popular feature on the Technogym Domestic Line of equipment, like the Technogym HIIT Run and Technogym Ride.

Flooring that fits the bill

Who knew gym floors could be such an interesting topic?!

Many of our projects in 2023 saw requests from shipyards who sought to outfit a gym space with a more architectural style sports floor. This is a trend that we warmly welcome, as we recommend installing gym floor throughout the space to create a multifunctional training area that allows users to train wherever they wish, as well as additional protection for the equipment, user, and deck!

The technology for gym flooring has come a long way, making it functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. We regularly recommend and specify Ecore – it has options for a variety of spaces, along with multiple design and finish options, and this luxury flooring provides a seamless finish through the guest areas.

The wellness hunters

Across the whole fitness industry, the importance of recovery is now as high as fitness and training itself, and this movement has transferred over to yachts as well. People are chartering superyachts specifically with wellness in mind, and that means everything from massage guns and compression therapies to holistic spa spaces and treatment rooms.

For superyacht designers, this has led to development of the wellness deck, where gyms, spas, saunas, and treatment rooms reside in one place and often utilise both the interior and exterior of that deck.

I work closely with Kayleigh Westgarth, who runs our sister company Coral Spa Consultants, to offer our clients a better integrated gym and spa, creating a total wellness sphere for training, recovery, and relaxation.

Whether it’s streaming Netflix while on the treadmill, participating in an online spin class, or listening to a relaxing playlist during yoga practice, the audio-visual aspects of a home gym impact the overall enjoyment and functionality of the space.

“Clients are accustomed to increasingly advanced home entertainment systems, and it’s important that a home gym lives up to their audio-visual expectations” advises Edward Thomas, Managing Partner of Gym Marine Yachts & Interiors.

AUDIO

The sound system plays a key role in a gym, as it creates the atmosphere and motivational energy. From an acoustic perspective, gyms tend to be harsh rooms with mostly hard surfaces, so producing clear and vibrant audio can be a challenge. Acoustic treatments on the walls help to improve the acoustic properties of the space, as well as isolate the noise coming from the gym.

It’s important to incorporate enough speakers in a gym to create a high sound pressure an overcome the background noise generated by the machines. As gym’s don’t typically have a single focal point, omni-directional audio is most suitable. Sum-to-mono combines the left and right audio input signals of the power amplifier to provide a mono signal output to the speakers.

Installing audio systems for multiple users is an increasingly common request in gym design. The easiest way to do this is by using Bluetooth transmitters so that each gym user can have their own set of headphones and select there preferred audio channel. To avoid headphones, it’s possible to install directional speakers aimed at each piece of equipment so that the audio can only be heard on that exact area.

home gym design

VISUAL

From a posture and comfort perspective, watching a large TV screen on the wall of a gym while exercising is better than hunching over a smaller screen on a machine. As such, it is a good idea to talk to clients about whether they really want machines with in-built TV displays, as they will likely have a better viewing experience from a TV on the wall.

With any TV screen, it’s important to consider the view from all angles of the gym to ensure the TV can be watched from wherever the user is exercising. Various TV mounting solutions can be used to improve viewing flexibility, such as vertical lifts to adjust viewing height or drop-down ceiling lifts with 360-degree motorised swivels to allow for multiple viewing angles.

It is also worth finding out whether the client intends on using any specific fitness apps, as there are certain ranges of machines that link to specific apps via Bluetooth, enabling users to participate in virtual races and watch the content on the gym’s TV screen.

The aesthetics of the gym can also be improved by taking advantage of the latest technology and replacing traditional TV screens with Mirror TVs or micro-LED video walls.

home gym design

CABLING

For clients that request machines with in-built screens, additional cabling will allow for the ultimate flexibility when it comes to machine connectivity.

There are three options for inputting external content into machines in a home gym environment: traditional television channels can be delivered to the machine via a coaxial cable; IPTV can be delivered via a CAT5 ethernet cable; and a select number of machines feature HDMI inputs, which will allow them to become part of the distributive AV system.

If it’s not possible to install additional cabling, then equipment selection is important. Typically, the top-of-the-range machines with in-built screens will have WIFI connectivity and their own operating systems with a basic selection of apps installed for streaming media content.

Once an equipment wish list has been drawn up, and the gym layout has been planned and confirmed, options for each piece of equipment on the layout can be identified. “The equipment shouldn’t be decided on until the layout has been finalised,” advises Edward Thomas, Managing Partner of Gym Marine Yachts & Interiors. When choosing equipment, there are some key factors to consider.

MULTIFUNCTIONAL EQUIPMENT...

When faced with limited floor space, it’s beneficial to choose equipment that optimises its footprint with the most available exercises per square metre. One of the best examples of this is a dual-adjustable pulley, which can fit into a corner and takes up between 2-3 square metres, including the working area, with 180 different exercises in one footprint.

selecting the right gym equipment

AESTHETICS...

The first challenge when choosing gym equipment is to balance function with form. First and foremost, gym equipment needs to be functional and practical to last in a gym environment. This is perhaps the most important consideration when choosing gym equipment: form must follow function

If aesthetics is a priority, however, there are cost-effective solutions. For example, it may be possible to source equipment that mimics elements of the home’s interior design scheme – there are lots of fitness equipment manufacturers that offer a standard selection of colours for the paint and plastic and a standard selection of leather upholstery options at little or no extra cost. This gives a bespoke feel, without having to spend large amounts on customisation and enhancements.

FUTUREPROOFING & AN UNBIASED APPROACH...

Having a home gym is a big investment and it’s important to futureproof that investment by ensuring it’s used for as long as possible. Items that have on-demand workouts, online training programmes or other features will help keep users engaging with the equipment

It might be tempting to source all gym equipment from one manufacturer. However, the best-in-class equipment for each item on the wish list won’t necessarily come from the same manufacturer.

A gym’s layout has a big impact on the aesthetics of the overall space and, as such, careful planning should go into the positioning of each piece of equipment. “As with every room in a house, a home gym should be worthy of an amazing photoshoot and avoid falling into the all-too-common trap of looking like a cluttered jungle of metal and plastic,” advises Edward Thomas, Managing Partner of Gym Marine Yachts & Interiors

Firstly, it helps arrange equipment in a way that is aesthetically optimised when anyone walks into the gym so that the space feels expansive and orderly. This can be done by placing equipment in ascending height order and avoiding any bulky machines directly in front of the entrance.

For the first incarnation of any home gym, it’s also advisable to only fill the space up to 75 per cent. “Fitness is an ever-evolving pursuit and if the user takes up a new discipline in the future, this extra space will allow for new additions, such as specialist machines,” adds Edward.

It is also recommended that gym layouts feature zoned areas in terms of the equipment, creating distinctive cardio, strength and stretching or yoga areas. Each of these areas come with individual considerations that will impact the overall layout of the gym.

optimal gym layout

CARDIO AREA...

Access to equipment

Leaving enough space to get on and off equipment might sound obvious, but it is often overlooked during the planning of a gym layout. This is a particularly important consideration for cardio equipment, with treadmills accessed from the back, and bikes and cross trainers accessed from the side.

Minimum safety clearance

Manufacturers will require that treadmills are positioned with a minimum safety clearance of at least one metre behind for safety purposes. In smaller spaces, this can be challenging and will often dictate the layout of the room.

Ceiling height

Cardio equipment requires ample ceiling height, which may also dictate the layout of a gym, particularly in spaces with pitched roofs.

Power supply

Cardio equipment generally needs to be powered and, therefore, positioned near power sockets. While more flexibility can be added to the gym layout with self-powered equipment, these versions don’t feature touchscreen displays. Installing floor boxes with power sockets is another solution that allows for flexibility in the layout of powered cardio equipment without visible wiring.

Television

It’s advisable that all cardio equipment faces a television as these are the machines that people spend the longest duration on and may like to watch TV or an online class while doing so. It’s important, therefore, to consider the distances between the machines and the TV.

optimal gym layout

STRENGTH AREA...

Flooring

As strength areas usually incorporate free weights, such as dumbbells or Olympic barbells, a different type of flooring will be needed in this area to provide protection.

Multi-functional equipment

Traditional strength equipment takes up a lot of space, but modern-day solutions allow gym designers to optimise the number of strength exercises per square metre. Choosing multi-functional equipment can allow more layout flexibility by incorporating many different exercises into a single footprint.

Working area

A lot of strength equipment, such as dual-adjustable pulleys or power racks, requires a certain amount of working area around it. These working areas are not included in the item’s CAD block, which many interior designers and architects rely on to plan a gym layout. As such, it is important to check the recommended working area for each piece of equipment and draw that onto any plans to ensure that users will have space to move around it and exercise to the full potential of the machine.

What are the deciding factors for guests when they book a hotel? The reasons will vary but it all comes down to the facilities that attract guests and will make a hotel stand out within the hospitality sector. One which is of importance to many is the fitness facilities available in the hotel gym. From business trips to complete wellness retreats, guests want to stay active and keep up with their training routine whilst they travel.

It is no longer enough to have a hotel gym that is equipped with the odd piece of cardio equipment and a mismatch of weights. They need to be as well designed and luxurious as the rest of the hotel.

Provide a variety of hotel gym equipment

For a 5-star service, guests expect all their needs to be catered for throughout their stay. This includes an extensive choice of equipment in the hotel gym. When designing a hotel gym, it should be approached in a similar way to that of a commercial facility. There needs to be a balance of workout options from cardio and strength training, to floor space for stretching and yoga.

Zoning is an excellent way to create a functional hotel gym layout which accommodates all guests’ fitness needs and capabilities. By sectioning areas for specific workouts, it will make it easier for guests to navigate around the gym and find their preferred activity.

focus on the interior design of the hotel gym

Whilst the layout of the space and the equipment options are a key factor in a hotel gym, the design should not be forgotten. Fitness facilities within the hospitality sector are often stuck between that of a commercial environment and a luxury environment. Sourcing equipment that focuses on both aesthetics and functionality will ensure that the interior style that features throughout the hotel continues into the gym.

The design of gym equipment is at the forefront of product development for many manufacturers. This is allowing not only hotel gyms but all types of wellness facilities to add a unique style. From dark and bold fitness machines for a dramatic interior to equipment with natural materials for a luxurious finish, hotel gyms can now find their own niche.

To incorporate the interior elements and branding of the hotel into the gym, there is also the option to customise equipment. Specific colours, materials and logos can be featured across the wellness area, reinforcing the identity of the hotel.

Hotel Gym

keep guests connected and engaged

For those who choose to train in a hotel gym whilst travelling, many will have some form of fitness technology. From fitness watches to training apps, the ability to track workouts will be of importance to guests. Therefore, when selecting cardio machines, find ones with fantastic connection functionalities for multiple devices. Alongside this, it is important that there is strong Wi-Fi in the hotel gym which is easy to connect to. As guests may want to follow workouts on personal devices or fitness apps require internet connection.

Audio and visual technology play a big part in creating a motivating and enjoyable atmosphere. Adjustable sound systems should be installed to create the correct ambience in a specific workout area. For televisions, they should be placed in optimum positioning across the hotel gym so they can be viewed from all angles.

Hotel Gym

offer exceptional service

The overall guest experience should be to the same exceptional standard wherever they are. Whether they are checking in, dining at a restaurant, or working out in the hotel gym. The equipment selection, interior design and technology will all have a huge impact on this, but additional simple touches are extremely beneficial.

Prior to their stay, offer guests the chance to book in with a qualified personal trainer once they arrive. This could be for a 1-1 session or to provide equipment demonstrations. When using the hotel gym, always provide guests with fresh towels, refillable water bottles and post workout snacks for a 5* experience from start to finish.

It may seem simple designing a home gym and all it takes is putting gym equipment into a room. Unfortunately not. We have seen plenty of situations where people have rushed into buying equipment to only find issues further down the line. Recently, we were asked by a client, why is it so important to specify a gym in advance? We had plenty of advice to give and came up with a list of dos and don’ts for the early stages of designing a home gym.

If you want even further advice (trust us, we have plenty!) Then book a free consultation with one of our gym designers.

1. Do plan your home gym in advance

Before any work begins, check the location of all sockets and power supplies. These may need to be repositioned if they are too high, in awkward spaces or there are simply not enough. Trailing wires throughout your gym is never a good look, neither is it safe! Floor boxes are a great solution, but you will also need to consider how these will be integrated into the floor when designing a home gym.

Speaking of safety, decide in the planning stage if anything needs to be fixed to the walls or ceiling. As wall reinforcements or strong points may be required.

2. Don’t limit your gym flooring to one area

When renovating any room in the house, flooring is usually top of the list. It is the same when designing a home gym, if not more important. As both functionality and aesthetics need to be considered.

Choosing the right flooring, and fitting it throughout the gym will allow you to maximise the training space available and ensure the floor is suitable for all exercises in all places.

Strong, high-quality, durable gym flooring will protect your equipment, absorb impact, reduce noise and prevent any injuries.

3. Do plan the positioning of your home gym equipment before you buy

designing a home gym

You will most likely already have an idea of the equipment you would like before designing a home gym, but it needs to be a balance of what you want and what fits into the space. Overcrowding is a common issue and it causes the gym to be an overwhelming environment.

By planning the positioning of your gym equipment prior to purchasing, it will highlight what additional space is required. This includes room to get on and off cardio machines and floor space for functional movements.

4. Don’t forget about mirrors when designing a home gym

In any fitness facility, the walls will be covered with large full length mirrors, in particular by the weights section. They are an excellent addition when designing a home gym as they will allow you to improve your form for an effective workout. Not only that, but mirrors will also create the illusion of a larger and brighter workout space.

However, don’t install your mirrors until you have selected your gym flooring, as it may need to be fitted underneath the mirrors. You will also need to consider skirting boards, as these will also alter the size of the mirrors you need.

5. Do consider all technology within the space

From watching shows to following online workouts, televisions are a focal point within gyms. Whilst designing a home gym, there are a couple of points to think about:

  • How far should cardio machines be positioned from the TV?
  • Will the TV be visible from the rest of the room?
  • Can it be seen easily at floor level for activities such as yoga or pilates?

If you are purchasing equipment with AV features, then check if you need additional cables for those screens too.

6. Don’t rush the process when designing a home gym

It is exciting designing a home gym and it is hard not to jump straight into the building stage. Skipping certain steps or not specifying the finer details in the initial stages will end up slowing down the process, rather than speeding it up.

Taking the time to ensure everything is planned and well thought out in advance will avoid mistakes, prevent delays and save money in the long run.

If you want help sourcing equipment, getting best value for money and a smooth process from start to finish, our team can help.

A commonly forgotten part of the house, garages usually end up as additional storage space for all matter of things. Yet, they hold so much potential and can add value to a property. As more people are beginning to invest in home gym equipment, garage gym designs are becoming increasingly popular.

Why are Garages a Great Space for a Home Gym?

Motivating yourself to get to the gym in the first place can be the hardest part of working out. Then you arrive and end up waiting around for equipment during peak times. A garage gym design right on your doorstep eliminates all these factors and will help you train more effectively. Separate from the main house, it also offers a completely private workout space. You can lock yourself away, blast your favourite motivation music and completely focus on your training.

Their standard rectangular shape with no awkward spaces makes them the perfect blank canvas. With few or no pipes, windows and other features causing limitations, it also offers the potential to completely rebuild. Accessibility is another benefit of a garage gym design. Their large doors make equipment installation a lot easier. They also offer the luxury of a transformable gym space as you can move your workout outdoors.

What Needs to be Considered when Planning your Garage Gym Design?

As tempting as it can be, don’t jump straight into buying your equipment. Flooring, electricity, lighting and ventilation are all key factors when it comes to any type of gym design.

Good quality gym flooring not only protects your equipment, it also reduces noise and decreases the impact on joints during dynamic exercises. There are plenty of designs, colours and thicknesses to choose from. For a quick and easy installation, the Jordan Interlocking Tiles are ideal with home gym bundles available.

Electricity is another vital component of your garage gym conversion. When deciding the layout, you must consider the location of sockets as wires running across the floor is neither a safe nor attractive look. Depending on your gym equipment you may not need any power sources, however you will certainly need lighting. Don’t rely on windows and your garage door as a natural light source, as you’ll certainly regret it during dark winter evenings. Evenly distributing your lighting throughout your garage gym design will create a safer more inviting space.

Lastly you will need to consider ventilation. The cooler temperate in the UK is a benefit as you can simply open your window or garage door for air flow. However, there is also the option of installing air conditioning units for a comfortable workout, especially if multiple family members are working out at the same time.

Which Equipment is Best Suited for a Garage Gym Design?

Your choice of equipment will depend on the floor space and whether it’s a double or single garage gym design. Especially if you still want to keep part of your garage as storage for bikes and other items. However, there is plenty of gym equipment with space saving designs to ensure you can have all your favourite pieces in your garage gym.

For cardio machines, indoor exercise bikes and indoor rowing machines are an excellent choice due their small footprint, low height and no power requirements. Alternatively, if space is not an issue, then you have the freedom to choose from desirable features such as entertainment options.

When it comes to strength training equipment, the options for a garage gym design are endless. Utilising the space with multi-gyms such as the Life Fitness G2 and adjustable dumbbells guarantees a full body workout without overcrowding your workout area. Squat racks with Olympic bars and plates are another popular choice. The Proud Squat Stand in particular is an ideal addition as it can be stored away when not in use.

Lastly, never underestimate your gym accessories. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is a great option for a quick workout using functional training equipment such as kettlebells, dumbbells, plyo boxes and more. Just remember to leave plenty of room for your workout as well as storage to ensure a tidy garage gym design.
